FIT GOT REAL!! Re-launched This Girl Can campaign.

Sport England have re-launched their This Girl Can campaign.  The campaign acknowledges that many women still struggle to fit 'conventional' exercise into their often busy lives.

The message is now that 'everything counts' and women are encouraged to get active however and whenever they can - including in the park, at home (hula-hooping in the kitchen!), on the school run (literally!), in the workplace (use the stairs!) and lots more.  Using the hashtag #FitGotReal, women are encouraged to share their own stories.

CONGRATULATIONS! Manchester Girls Can Women win 2 awards!

At Manchester Sports Awards 2018, Maryam and Farah both won awards in the ‘Changing Lifestyle’ category for the impact using the This Girl Can Gym had had on their lives.

Both women had different stories to tell about how the gym had improved both their physical and mental health.  Both women had also gone on to inspire their communities and families to improve their fitness. The gym opened in Belle Vue Leisure Centre last year.

The award was presented by Manchester-born Commonwealth gold medallist Diane Modahl and founder of Manchester based Diane Modahl sports foundation.

This Girl Can summer taster sessions - what you told us!

Throughout summer 2018 Manchester Girls Can offered free taster sessions for women to try adventurous activities.  We had a great response with many women trying skateboarding, BMX, kayaking, mountain biking, climbing and track cycling.  Some of your feedback:

"It was a good opportunity to try out something I had wanted to try for ages, but didn't know where to start".

"The opportunity to try out new things has really raised my confidence in being active"

We're glad you all had such a good time and hope you've found the time to carry on in your new activity afterwards!

Thanks again to the National Cycling Centre, Projekts skatepark, Manchester Climbing Centre and Debdale Outdoor Centre for teaming up with Manchester Girls Can to run the sessions.

Manchester Sports Awards 2018

Congratulations to the Manchester Girls Can women who have been nominated for the 2018 Manchester Sports Awards!  One woman from our primary school This Girl Can mums' project and two from our This Girl Can women-only gym!

Well done to Claremont Primary School also who are nominated in the schools category for their great work, including their This Girl Can sessions for staff and mums and their work on instilling confidence in their girls to be active!

GOOD LUCK and fingers crossed for you all...

Manchester Girls Can celebrates International Women's Day 2018 in style!

Manchester Girls Can had a fantastic week for International Women's Day!  Including free climbing tasters for women at Manchester Climbing Centre; meeting Muslim women at the new women only gym at Belle Vue Leisure Centre; hearing inspirational stories from women running Parkrun in Platt Fields - including older women, a woman recently diagnosed with breast cancer, women running to alleviate symptoms of depression, women volunteers and more!  And last but not least, attending the 'Our Wythenshawe Women' event to promote Manchester Girls Can, which included a dance demo for all the women (some great moves from participants!).  All in all a great week, showing that across Manchester... 'THIS GIRL CAN!'.

Manchester's Women Only Gym

Manchester's 'This Girl Can' women-only gym has been a great success.  Opened in 2017 at Belle Vue Leisure Centre, there have been hundreds of visits each week.  Users have told us they feel more comfortable in a female-only gym, or that due to cultural obligation the women-only gym means they now have the opportunity to do exercise when they didn't before.  There is help on hand to use the equipment.  Pop in to the leisure centre to find out more!

This Mum Can!

11 Manchester primary schools have taken part in This Girl Can sessions for mums - to support busy mums, grans etc to get active!  Most schools have chosen fitness and dance classes. The sessions have proved really popular with mums coming together to have fun, get fit and make new friends while the kids are at school!  Most of the sessions are at 9am after school drop-off, or after school.
